HEALTH BENEFITS
By the time you finish reading this, you'll really love this drink even more!
Cucumber: A fruit and not a vegetable, cucumber is filled with health benefits: it may help lower blood sugar, prevent constipation, and support weight loss.
Green Apples: A hybrid fruit, apples contain pectin, which supports beneficial gut bacteria growth and helps efficiently break down foods, supports digestive health, promotes regular bowel movements, and may prevent constipation. High in soluble fiber, green apples help prevent stroke and heart disease, lower blood pressure, and contributes to overall healthy cardiovascular function.
Ginger: A plant spice from the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale, ginger is commonly used in Asian, Ayurvedic, and Middle Eastern dishes. It is a relative of curcumin and cardamon whose use dates back 3,000 years ago in India. Ginger is an antioxidant that reduces nausea during pregnancy and before menstruation, fights inflammation, and relieves symptoms of colds, pain, arthritis, migraines, and high blood pressure. Ginger also boosts testosterone.
Lemon: A good source of vitamin C, one lemon has 31 mg, 51% of the reference daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C. It contains hesperidin and diosmin, which lower cholesterol. Lemon juice increases urine volume and urine pH, helping prevent kidney stones in people who have previously had them. Lemons’ citric acid and vitamin C content help prevent anemia by increasing the absorption of iron from plant foods. The limonene and naringenin may help prevent cancer, but no studies prove it. To get the benefits of pectin and its fiber, include the pulp.
Orange: Originally from China, all oranges contain 100% of daily recommended vitamin C. In addition to all the above benefits of lemons stated above, both lemons and oranges’ vitamin C content helps form collagen, important for hair, skin, nails, joints, and wound healing. Vitamin C may also helps slow progression of age-related macular degeneration and blindness. Lemons and oranges also provide calcium, potassium, and folate, the latter of which is important in pregnancy and the neurological development of the baby.
Cilantro: A leaf from the coriander plant Coriandrum sativum L., one cup of raw cilantro has 16% of the daily recommended value of vitamin K, which puts calcium in the bones and not around the arteries. It also has 20% and 8% of the daily recommended amounts of vitamins A and C. Cilantro is antioxidant. Polyphenols are also antioxidant, and may prevent cell damage that contributes to premature aging and chronic disease. It is antibacterial against certain pathogens like Salmonella, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes.
Spinach: Spinach is Spinacia oleracea, and it originated in Persia. It is in the amaranth family, related to beets and quinoa. High in insoluble fiber, it aids constipation. It is also high in carotenoids, which the body converts to vitamin A. It is also high in vitamin C, folate, iton, calcium, and vitamin K1. Vitamin K1 is essential for blood clotting, and just one one leaf contains over half of your daily needs!
Spinach is also high in these nutrients: Lutein: linked to improved eye health. Kaempferol: an antioxidant that may decrease the risk of cancer and chronic disease. Nitrates: may promote heart health. Quercetin: structurally similar to hydroxychloroquine, may ward off viruses, i infection, and inflammation. Spinach is one of the richest dietary sources of quercetin. Zeaxanthin: may improve eye health.
Mint: There are 15-20 mint plants, including peppermint and spearmint, belong to the plant family Lamiaceae, genus Mentha. High in fiber, vitamin A, folate, iron, and manganese. A calming herb, people have used mint for thousands of years to help soothe upset stomach and indigestion. Mint contains the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent called rosmarinic acid. Mint is also known for its antiallergic effects, and the essential oils are better known to relieve them, as well as symptoms of asthma and irritable bowel syndrome. Mint also contains menthol, an aromatic decongestant that may help break up mucus and phlegm. Use care when chopping mint. Use a sharp knife and cut gently, because a dull knife or over-chopping can bruise it, leading to a loss of flavor that ends up… on the cutting board surface!
Thank you. Make green drinks myself too. Beet and carrot juice, etc. There are a variety of ways to work with greens.
